The woman and her boyfriend had been fighting before she was pushed, witnesses informed police, according to the NYPD.
In a shocking incident at the Fulton Street subway station in Manhattan, a woman lost both her feet after her boyfriend allegedly pushed her onto the subway tracks into the path of an oncoming train. The incident, which occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. ET on a Saturday, left the victim with severe injuries to her legs.
Witnesses reported that the woman and her boyfriend had been arguing before she was pushed onto the tracks. The suspect, identified as Christian Valdez, fled the scene but was later apprehended and charged with attempted murder and felony assault.
The victim was found conscious and responsive after being struck by a southbound 3 train and was transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. However, she tragically lost both her feet as a result of the incident.
This horrifying event not only caused immense physical harm to the victim but also resulted in significant disruptions to subway services. Some subway trains heading southbound were delayed for hours, causing inconvenience to commuters. The NYCT Subway posted updates about delays and reroutes in subway services due to the incident, highlighting the impact it had on the transportation system.
In response to rising concerns about safety in the subway system, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the deployment of New York National Guard troops and New York State Police troopers to target transit crime. Hochul’s plan involves assigning 1,000 state workers, including 250 state police troopers and Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police members, to assist the NYPD in enhanced baggage checks at heavily trafficked areas of the subway system.
This incident underscores the urgent need for measures to ensure the safety of commuters in the subway system. While efforts are being made to address transit crime, such incidents serve as a reminder of the vulnerability faced by individuals using public transportation. As investigations continue and measures are implemented to enhance security, it is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of all passengers traveling through the subway system.
