Apfel, who was born on August 29, 1921, gained notoriety for her daring, eye-catching ensembles that combined extravagant costume jewellery with haute couture. At every fashion show she went, her large round glasses with black frames, vivid red lipstick, and short white hair made her stand out. Albert Maysles’ documentary film “Iris” and museum exhibits both focused on her style.

Apfel stated on “Today” that she never retired and believed that being retired at any age was worse than dying. Don’t stop just because a number appears on the screen. When Apfel was the subject of a show titled “Rara Avis,” which translates to “rare bird,” at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in 2005, her own stardom took off. Apfel was born in New York City to Sadye and Samuel Barrel, who were Jewish. In 2015, Apfel’s spouse passed away.
