Reese Witherspoon, known for her role as Elle Woods in the iconic movie “Legally Blonde,” is collaborating with Amazon to bring the beloved character to television screens.
Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, is leading the charge, along with the creative minds behind “Gossip Girl” and “The O.C.,” Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.
The TV series spinoff is set to explore new adventures within the world of “Legally Blonde,” although specific plot details remain under wraps for now. Witherspoon, who starred in the original films, will also serve as an executive producer alongside Schwartz and Savage.
The decision to adapt “Legally Blonde” for television comes as part of Amazon’s efforts to develop projects based on acquired intellectual property, following their acquisition of MGM in 2022. Alongside “Legally Blonde,” other projects in the pipeline include adaptations of “Barbershop” and “Robocop.”
While it’s uncertain if Witherspoon will reprise her role as Elle Woods in the TV series, she has previously expressed interest in exploring the character’s journey in her 40s, delving into themes of aging and contemporary ideas.
“Legally Blonde” originated as a 2001 romantic comedy film directed by Robert Luketic, based on Amanda Brown’s novel of the same name. The story follows Elle Woods, a determined sorority girl who breaks stereotypes as she pursues a law degree at Harvard.
The film was a commercial success, grossing $141 million worldwide and receiving critical acclaim, particularly for Witherspoon’s performance. Its popularity spawned a sequel, a spin-off, and a successful Broadway musical.
With Amazon’s backing and Witherspoon’s passion for the character, fans of “Legally Blonde” can anticipate an exciting new chapter in Elle Woods’ story as it transitions to the small screen.
